Proud members of the National, Regional and Connecticut contingents visited the Connecticut Science Center on September 20 for an interactive tour followed by the groundbreaking of the FGCC Rooftop Childrens' Garden.

The Connecticut Science Center is dedicated to inspiring lifelong learning through interactive and innovative experiences that explore our changing world through science. To that end, Dee Mozzochi, FGCC Connecticut Science Center Childrens' Garden Chair, has worked with Maria Nahom, FGCC Past President, Donna Nowak, FGCC President, and Kathrine Neville, FGCC Horticulture Chair to realize the dream of constructing a rooftop terrace garden for all visitors to enjoy. Over 50 member clubs, three private donors, and the FGCC Board have provided funding for the project.

The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut was given an opportunity to be part of the Connecticut Science Center, in a fabulous state–of–the-art building overlooking the Connecticut River in Hartford. Our plan is to establish a Children’s Garden on a portion of the rooftop terrace. Members in our Federation, who are Landscape Designers, will plan the garden.  Funds were raised for the plantings and the implantation. The Science Center will maintain the garden. A rooftop garden was chosen as our partnership with the science center because of its value for our environment.  Among its strengths are the absorption of rain, reversal of urban heat, improved air quality and a refuge for birds and people.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $20,000 to finance the garden.  YOU CAN HELP by donating your $$$, AND for every $ you give towards this project, your Federation will give another $ for you.

Your federation Board started you off with a $5000 donation. We will match your clubs gift up to $5000 and we hope to obtain another $5000 from private sources to be able to reach our goal of $20,000.

This is how it works:

$5000 - voted by FGCCT in September 2008
$5000 – gifted by our clubs
$5000 – MATCHED by FGCCT in 2009
$5000 – private donations
$20,000 - GOAL

Checks may be made out to FGC of CT, designated “Children’s Garden” and mailed to Federated Garden Clubs of CT, Inc., P.O. Box 854, Branford, CT 06405.

We are so excited and grateful for the support that clubs have shown!
